Bill reintroduced to expand non-postal products and services

Today, freshman Rep. Ben McAdams (D-UT) introduced H.R. 3577, a bill that would provide the U.S. Postal Service with the authority to offer certain non-postal property, products, and services on behalf of state, local, and tribal governments as a means to increase net revenues for the agency.

H.R. 3577 would grant the Postal Service such authorities after entering into agreements with state, local, or tribal governments and assuming the property, products, or services would provide an enhanced value to the public, would not interfere with postal services, and would give USPS a reasonable revenue.

Similar legislation was introduced in the 115th Congress by former Rep. Mia Love (R-UT) in the House and former Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) in the Senate and while neither bill progressed out of committee, similar language is often inserted into postal reform legislation.

As letter carriers know, postal reform failed to advance in the last Congress and a new postal reform bill has not been introduced yet for the 116th but is expected in the coming months.

NALC will continue to monitor this bill and any related legislation to keep letter carriers up to date on the latest developments.
