House reintroduces six-day delivery resolution

Today, Reps. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) and Sam Graves (R-MO) reintroduced their six-day door delivery resolution for the 116th Congress, calling on the House to take “all appropriate measures to ensure the continuation of its 6-day mail delivery service.”

H. Res. 54’s introduction marks the sixth Congress that this resolution has been introduced.

With 259 cosponsors in the previous Congress, the resolution enjoyed broad bipartisan support, including 185 Democrats and 74 Republicans last Congress. With 43 of those members not returning to the 116th Congress (including 19 Democrats and 24 Republicans), we will have to work hard to fill the void.

89 House freshmen (including 60 Democrats and 29 Republicans) have been sworn into the 116th and we encourage letter carriers to take some time to introduce NALC and its priorities to these new members so that they understand the importance of supporting services through these important resolutions. As it relates to six-day, let them know…

  • Approximately, 493.4 million mail pieces are delivered per day to businesses and households across the country.
  • The ability to send and receive packages, letters, bills, and medications six if not seven days a week is vital to the economic success of America’s small businesses (who depend on the affordable and reliable service), the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), and the broader $1.4 trillion mailing industry that employs over 7.5 million Americans.

If your Member is a freshman, take the time to research him or her and learn a few things about their background before you reach out. If your Member of Congress was here last Congress and was a previous supporter, please contact them and ask them to cosponsor this important resolution.
