Today, the House Oversight & Government Reform Committee passed a series of bipartisan bills designed to increase government accountability and efficiency. Among the bills considered:

Federal Vehicle Repair Cost Savings Act (H.R. 1613): Requires the use of remanufactured parts for federal civilian vehicles, including those belonging to the Postal Service. H.R. 1613 plans to buy better quality parts at a more reduced cost. Federal agencies would be encouraged to use these parts, but fleet managers would have final say in their implementation, on a case-by-case basis, to help ensure cost savings. The measure was introduced by Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-MI).

Gold Star Fathers Act (S.136): Extends veterans preference to the fathers of certain permanently disabled or deceased veterans who are seeking appointments or employment within the civil service. Currently, only mothers are given job preference under these circumstances. The measure originated in the Senate, sponsored by Sens. Ron Wyden (D-OR), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), and Susan Collins (R-ME). A similar version of the bill, H.R. 1222 was introduced in the House earlier this year by Rep. Elizabeth Etsy (D-NY).
