Scheduling a meeting with your member of Congress

Consistent communication with a district office is the best way to build relationships and keep staff engaged. Below are some simple steps you can take to get started:

Schedule and prepare for a meeting with your lawmaker and their staff.

  • To find your House member and contact information, click here.
  • To find your senator and contact information, click here.
  • Attend a town hall and ask a question related to our issues. To find a listing of upcoming town halls, click here.
  • Monitor your lawmakers’ social media accounts to see whether they may have addition upcoming events.
  • Do your research! Are your lawmakers current co-sponsoring resolutions to maintain six-day delivery, door delivery and service standards?
  • Practice your story with family, friends or colleagues.

During your meeting:

  • Expect just 10 to 30 minutes for your meeting.
  • Explain the impact of an issue and make it personal.
  • Pitch a specific request and wait for a response.
  • Leave behind one of NALC’s many fact sheets. For the full list, click here.

Follow up with your lawmaker’s office and with NALC.

  • Submit a lobbying report to NALC to let us know how your meeting went. For the form, click here.
  • Write a personal, hand-written note thanking the lawmaker and their staff for the meeting.
  • Schedule a follow-up meeting for the following recess.

Maintaining these relationships does more than just help change the hearts and minds of lawmakers—it can double the impact when activists pick up the phone or send a quick e-mail as battles brew in Washington, DC.
