NALC, the AFL-CIO and local affiliates are contacting senators to ask them to sideline the filibuster in order to protect voting rights.
19 states have passed 34 pieces of legislation that make it harder to vote, including limiting voting by mail, which allowed 54 million voters to vote safely last November. These new laws largely seek to target marginalized voters.
Now, it is up to the Senate to protect Americans’ voting rights. Two bills in the Senate, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (S.4) and the Freedom to Vote Act (S.2747), would protect and expand voting rights. They have not passed in the Senate because of the filibuster, a Senate rule that requires 60 votes to advance legislation. With an evenly divided Senate, passing this legislation will require a rule change to the filibuster.
NALC members are encouraged to contact their senators to sideline the filibuster so that critical voting rights legislation can pass.
